WW: Refilling my Cup

My cup is empty. Ever have days or months like that? That you go, go, go and do, do, do. Your nails are neglected, your hair is dull, and your eyes bear dark circles. Your once perky, put together self is replaced by a dumpy person you hardly recognize in the mirror. And you are too tired to care. Then one day you suddenly realize you have nothing left to give. Filling your cup becomes imperative...

I took a run to soak up all the new gorgeous green lush around me. I indulged in a special treat. I had lunch with a girlfriend.

Then I set aside a few minutes to scrapbook. Back in the day before our formal office came to fruition. Pre-blogger, twitter, and facebook days... I had a scrapbooking room in the basement. Tables, space, all my goodies at my disposal. I could leave a page or two+ out and go about my day to return later, brimming with inspiration.

Then the digital world forged ahead. Paper became a thing of the past. My trinkets and treasures turned dusty. And my scrapbooking days were becoming fewer and fewer. Shutterfly and tiny prints did the legwork for me. And so many other sites were popping up, jumping on the insta-paperless-books bandwagon.

I miss it. I miss sitting and transforming a photo. Or ten photos. I miss the story I can tell with paper. I miss the creative outlet it provides.

So this week as the laundry piled up and the blogs went unread, I sat to again scrapbook, little bits here and there. Not the pre-made books. (Although I love those and they will also grace my coffee table.) I mean the real deal. The pages that start with a single thought and turn into a one-of-a-kind work of art customized just for me. The pages that make my creative juices flow. The perfect formula to refill my cup.

Now if I could only figure out how to do everything I want to digitally... Sigh.

I like the 12x12 books. And yes, some of it will be cut down the middle (as I design it as a 24 in spread), but I prefer my pages to flow that way. I think it gives a more uniform look. Here is an example from many moons ago- old school. (And good thing I don't take pics of scrapbook pages for a living. I'd need to practice a bit.)

I am no Becky Higgins or Ali Edwards, but I find the process therapeutic and rewarding.

  4. I was into scrapbooking for a while --before the kids came. You're right in that it's very therapeutic. Nowadays I just do every digital... so much easier and more instantaneous. Maybe I might go back to doing it the 'old' way one day... :)

  9. Good job on the scrapbook pages. Books, any kind of books - scrapbook, history books, novels - will never go out of style completely (at least I don't think so). There will always be some of us who love the feel of real paper in our hands. I still make photo albums, even though I have pics all over the coputer, I like looking through a real album. So, keep scrapbooking, there will always be someone who thinks that is real!

And thank you kindly for the prayers and kind expressions for Kristin. She is home and doing better, but still in pain (which the doc says she will likely have for sometime and will have to get used to). But, she will get to walk with her class on Sunday, even with losing 6 weeeks of school. I have a brief post about her recovery on Family Fountain.

  11. Oh your pages and things look great. I used to scrapbook in high school, but I don't think I have scrapbooked a thing since then some 12 years ago. I may pick it back. Right now I am trying to figure out photoshop. I have no idea what I am doing, but my husband bought and installed it so I am working on that.

  14. I'm always left speechless when I come see what you've created. I love, LOVE your header! I haven't scrapped for almost 3 yrs. Blogging took over that part of my life. Then it took over my reading. I never thought I'd go digital because I loved my film camera so much. I did make the change about 5 yrs ago, but I do miss the photos in hand!

  16. I too need my cup refilled, unfortunately I can't think of what might do that. Oh wait...I know, it's your blog. It's words are always gracious, it's photos always inspiring. Thank you. I found your blog post on my dashboard as I always do, and I was redirected with no problem. If I hadn't noticed the new URL I wouldn't have even known that it was changed. It was a seemless transition, for me anyway :)

  18. One day, I am going to stop coming here but I'm just so darn curious.
Your work is gorgeous! You have a very creative mind. I stopped scrapbooking after I realized that I just can't do it. I can't get the image from my mind to actually happen on paper.
Nice stuff! :) And, for real, there is something about holding it in your hand that the computer can't replace! :)

  20. Those are lovely!! I am a paper scrapbooker. I have not learned how to digitally scrapbook yet, but I am dying to learn! So far I just rely on Shutterfly.

  21. I was totally into scrapbooking before everything went digital. My papers and stickers and all those supplies I lovingly and longingly picked out and purchased are also gathering dust. It's sad but I doubt I'll ever go back to it. :(

  22. You do such a fantastic job with scrapbooking, both traditionally and digitally. I'm beginning to wonder if there's anything Lish can't do. ;)

  25. love i! Im a scrapper, and although I like the digi stuff on occasion- there is just nothing like getting your paper out to play with!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Love your pages, I never got the hang of paper scrapping like I did with digital scrapping (which I do whenever I have time, and love!) but I think it's such a great way to take a little "me" time, immersing yourself into creating a page and forgetting about the million other things that need to be done.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Your pages are beautiful. I wish I had the patience for that. My poor childrens' pictures will be forever trapped on my hard drive, I'm afraid.

  31. I filled my cup by spending an afternoon in the mountains with my dad. It was awesome!

  32. Well My cup is too full but I get similar results. Left a broken nail for three days all the time marveling that I wasn't obsessing over it. Between developing my site and helping with grandchildren it seems I have no time at all for gardening, little for sewing, and even cooking is haphazard, but I love it!
Your scrapbook is much like your digital presentations, You truly have a gift. I can totally understand why you might want to get away from the computer for a while to cut and paste the old fashioned way. But which ever way you do it you produced beautiful works of art.

  58. I was way into scrapbooking and can't seem to find time to do it anymore. My kids' scrapbooks are way behind. I thought about going digital and I just can't make myself do it. Just not the same. I keep saying I'll have time when the kids are older and in school full-time. we'll see....

  64. I love this post #1 your paper layout is awesome - so many people have stopped doing it entirely (I treasure my paper stuff - I love to see it sitting on my shelf and I love to touch it) #2 your digital layouts are awesome (I see you use some elements from Designer Digitals - the talent over there blows me away!) #3 I do experience creative slumps but my worst enemy is the voice that says 'why are you doing this - what is the point' and that's when I know I need to go to bed!
