Just take a peek for yourself. (This is the road near our lakehouse.)
South Carolina is not only home to the yummy pine...
but also deciduous trees in abundance. Who knew? The best of both worlds if you will.
It's strange to have two autumns back to back. At times it felt a little like I was in Groundhog Day. But I have truly enjoyed the last few weeks as the leaves have slowly transformed into magnificent shades of reds, yellows, and oranges here in the beautiful state of South Carolina. I've been given a second chance to really savor this phenomenal miracle.
Unlike Iowa, the temps have been heavenly and we've been able to get out and explore our new surroundings.
The greater Columbia area is little slice of heaven.
If I didn't know better I'd have mistaken some of our last weeks for summer break at times... shorts, treasure hunting, boat rides, walks...
And if that wasn't deja vu enough, today was my kid's first day of school.
Same reluctance to have a picture snapped. Same rainy day. Same emotional wreck of a mom.
It was like I was sending my 12 year old 7th grader to kindergarten all over again. But that was easier... This time I was throwing him to the wolves, aka the other 1100 students in 7th and 8th grade. I did my best to fight back tears but the counselor must have seen it in my eyes because she leaned over and gave me a hug and whispered, "He's going to be fine."
After some disappointing setbacks with our home that we had planned to purchase the end of December, we've had to resort to long term rentals. Not an easy task in this coveted school district. But school was the priority. And we couldn't wait another day. So we settled on a home.
We will be moving our things from storage and transitioning in mid December from the lakehouse. Nothing like a little more craziness for the holidays.
I actually hosted Thanksgiving here for a hunk of my family at our temporary lakehouse rental. And would you believe I have only a couple pics to show for the entire time?
This is one I managed to snap.
I was met with much resistance for photos and sometimes you just want to retire the camera and kick back and avoid all and any whining.
I did manage a couple on my iphone. Yes, I've joined the world of instagram despite my many efforts to avoid it. It's easy. And sometimes those make for the best kind of photos. If you follow instagram, you can find me at projectalicia. And if you don't do instagram, you can still FOLLOW ME HERE. (Also found on my right sidebar.) You can even subscribe via email or print them. Isn't technology amazing?
Thank you so much for stopping by. Life seems to be a perpetual rollercoaster as of late and I certainly appreciate your visits and kind words.
Oh, and because I haven't been gabby enough...

ReplyDeleteLove this post :-)
ReplyDeleteWelcome to SC. I grew up in SD, so I understand the change you're going through! You must be in Lex 5 or Lex 1. We're in Lex 1, although I homeschool one child and my other attends Lake Murray Elementary in Lexington. If you've got any questions about the area, let me know! We've been here for seven years and really do love it here!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Photos! It's so much harder to send them to the wolves as they get older! I guess I am going to give in and join Instagram. I have seen some great pics from friends.
ReplyDeleteI miss Summer!!!!!

My Organized Chaos
It is neat you were able to have Autumn again. new schools & new surroundings are difficult for sure, I hope all smooths out for you and your family asap! Lovely photos, its great to see the positive and beauty of it all.~
ReplyDeleteI hear you about the resistance to picture-taking. That's a nice thing about iPhones or small cameras (I use an Oly E-P2): they are unobtrusive, and so you can oftentimes get shots where if the subject sees the big lens pointing at them, they freeze (or turn, or make a photobomb face.)
ReplyDeleteHope the move goes smoothly, and that y'all have a really nice Christmas season!
~EdT.
You've been in the midst of change and uncertainty for so long, not an easy road to walk. Thankfully you are still however choosing to find beauty and blessing along the way. Being thoroughly settled down the track will be wonderful
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like some of the chaos is starting to settle down. Getting the kids back into a routine always helps. Your photos are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteIf there was a season I could experience twice every year it would be fall or autumn as those to the south of us canucks call it....LOL!
ReplyDeleteHappy wednesday!
gorgeous pictures- I love the one with the leaves on the road (the third one down I think?).
ReplyDeleteAnd our family has been in transition for months now too- I feel your pain.
*hugs*
These are so gorgeous. I wouldn't expect anything less.
ReplyDeleteYour images are beautiful. I sent my boy to 7th grade this year, too...I will always remember him running up the walkway and at the last minute turning to throw me a wave.
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting!

Moving during the holidays..oh my, that does add a little extra crazy! I hope in spite of all of that you have a Magical Holiday season! ~ Barefoot Mama
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Photos!
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Alicia, sometimes you just have to put the camera down and enjoy the moment/cement the bonds! I enjoyed your pix as always.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!! Glad you relaxed without a camera at Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful! You really know how to capture the beauty of nature.
ReplyDeleteI would seriously LOVE to experience autumn twice. It is my favorite season by far. It is already freezing here overnight, which makes me a little sad!
ReplyDeleteLove the last picture. I always wanted a family picture like that.
ReplyDeleteThese photos are absolutely stunning, Lish! Hope the kids enjoyed their first day of school. I was thinking...maybe we could start the Shades of Autumn Photo Challenge all over again. It'll be like dejavu! ;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos, as always! I'm a bit jealous that you got to experience fall twice! Our trees are so bare and brown. All the color gone from any leaves that might be left. :( And if it makes you feel any better, I didn't take many photos of Thanksgiving either. I just didn't think about it.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous shots Alicia! I hope your kiddos enjoy the rest of the school year and that you get settled easily in your new place.
ReplyDelete;)
gorgeous autumn photos! this is my favorite time of year :)
ReplyDeleteYour photos are gorgeous. SC autumn is just how I would expect it to be, so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you've had to re-do so many things. The first day of school is probably one of the hardest. I can't imagine doing it a second time in one year! I'm always the parent fighting back the tears until we get to the car!
Hope things are getting a bit easier!
Wow, dejavu indeed... and still as always, completely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteFall is really pretty! I would have been like you with their first day! :( Just remember they will meet friends. They will have great times ahead.
ReplyDeleteI am so envious of where you live!
ReplyDeleteIsn't life grand?! I just know your move will be an easy one. Xmas dinner in your new home!!
ReplyDeleteDouble Autumn! Lucky you. I love the South. I know I tell you that all the time. But really I do. LOVE it. Glad you've found a rental that will work and the kids are getting back into a routine at a new school! Chaos and the holidays go together right?
ReplyDeleteWow! You got to have two sets of leaves turning and all those beautiful colors this year? Lucky duck. Good luck on moving into the new place!
ReplyDeleteAll of these pictures are outstanding, as usual -- but I especially love the photograph of the sweet-gum leaves on the road. Thanks for sharing all of the photos, & have an autumnal WW....
ReplyDeleteThe leaves are so vibrant!
ReplyDeletebeautiful photos!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love all of your Fall photos...but now I'm realizing that I will sorta miss your Winter snow photos...
ReplyDeleteGorgeous images.
ReplyDeleteYou made again such beautiful photos!!!
ReplyDeleteI know how you felt with your son starting at the new school! I would cry, too! I cried when he started kindergarten. And now that he has been sick for many months and still manages his school so well even if he is in pain. I´m always worried...
Anyway, have a great WW! And I hope everything will work out fine with your new house!
xoxo

I love the road and the shot of the leaves. Gorgeous! Two falls back to back does sound a bit like Groundhog Day. lol I also didn't take many photos on Thanksgiving. I was thankful not to hear any whining and just enjoyed the day in the moment.
ReplyDeleteYou really capture the beauty in everything. I live in NC, and I miss the deciduous trees of the northeast. I kind of think the pines are ugly. You make them look beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos. We've done the temporary living situation thing once. It's a challenge and an adventure.
ReplyDeleteThe temperatures dipped here in Greenville yesterday, but they are supposed to rise today. Glad you found a home in the area you wanted. It really is all about the school for us too.
ReplyDeleteCool that you get two falls this year. Sorry about the trouble with the house. The lake shots are beautiful as always.
ReplyDeleteLovely shots. Love your story of deja vu.
ReplyDeleteWow, this move has certainly not been easy. Hope you will be rewarded with finding just the perfect house.
ReplyDeleteDagmar
I love fall - you're so lucky to get to experience it twice! :)
ReplyDeleteThe water on that lake makes me really want to be outside. And somewhere where it's not 28 out.
ReplyDeleteI so remember my move from DC to GA in 2004... trying to get used to a completely different "country" (it literally felt like that!)... it takes time, hang in there... you are in my prayers :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the Carolinas - we're in NC. Fall here is beautiful, and, as you noticed, winter much less brutal. (My mother is from Iowa.)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics!
April
Awesome photos- as I expected. But I am so happy to see things getting into a somewhat "normal" state for you all- or at least heading in that direction. Glad to hear your holiday was enjoyable- you were on my mind with all I knew you had happening lately. Hope the rest of this week is great.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are beautiful Alicia.Good luck in settling in.
ReplyDeleteYour photography is AMAZING. I'm a newbie- just forayed into the world of DSLRs in March and started learning how to take pictures - and I have total picture envy! This is gorgeous!!
ReplyDeletei LOVE fall leaves and those pictures of the trees and leaves on the road are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures this week...who am I kidding...always love them. But you know that. We never really had a fall here. We might be getting it now so maybe I can finally take some fall photos. But now I'm in the mood for Christmas. SIGH. Sorry I'm so late getting over here to see you today. Just got mine up as well.
ReplyDeleteI love your photos each and every time I visit your blog. Just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove all your photos! I've linked up with you, I hope you'll share your wordless wednesday on my blog too:

ReplyDeleteLooks like you found a wonderful beautiful new place! First time to your blog!
ReplyDeleteFall in South Carolina looks absolutely gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous!!
ReplyDeletebeauties again! sorry you have to move again & not into your "home" yet... no way to get an extension on your lease there? It will be hard enough to move, but also from such a fun filled place. keep Christmas simple & add that next year you can do it up the way your family celebrates and it will mean more. hugs~ Faythe @ GMT
ReplyDeletethese are beautiful. I am so glad you are enjoying your new location.
ReplyDeleteLovely fall photos!
ReplyDeleteWOW!!!! What beautiful shots.
ReplyDeleteWonderful images! Our fall did not have the best color this year since it was so hot and dry at the end of the summer.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful pictures
