WW: Cali Vaca Part 2

Our Cali vacation has come to a close and I'm gritting my teeth and holding on to the last hours of summer with all of my might. As much as I love fall, I'm just not quite ready for all the fun to end.

I've been enjoying reliving our memories through photos...

Last week hubs and I were able to take a stroll on the Grandview Beach and we happened on a wingback chair just sitting there, the waves crashing up around it. It definitely isn't something you see everyday. After a little detective work, we learned there was a photographer who had dragged it down to snap some photos. I took a pic with my iphone and posted it to instagram. By morning it had over 70 likes, which is a lot for a gal with only a few loyal followers.

Turns out people like unusual things. And as much as I love my DSLR camera and the beauty that I've been able to capture, I love the ability to just snap my phone and text or tweet my pic in a matter of seconds without any uploading or computer editing. And instagram takes iphoneography to another level.

I'm sure there are some of you, like my brother in law, who think instagram is lame- heck I was even a little hesitant in the beginning, but you've obviously never lugged a heavy camera around an amusement park or beach all day. Instagram has literally transformed the way I think about photos. It removes the hassle of the bulky camera and the headache of all the settings and allows me to focus on the composition and perspective more. I also find I snap in locations that I'd never think to with my big camera.

Although I did tow my camera to the beach several times, it was my iphone that I preferred during the midday sun. Let's face facts, you can't plan your vacation or beach time or whatever it is you're doing around the placement of the sun. As much as we'd love to get perfect photos all day long, it's just not a realistic expectation. Not to mention the sand or humidity! Definitely a formula for disaster with expensive photography equipment as opposed to the portable phone, which you can plug into a protective case (ie. life case or otterbox) and even make safe in or around water.

The smart phone is the perfect solution for trips. Who knew?

Turns out the best camera really is the one you have with you! :)

Today I'm sharing some of my favorites. Enjoy my trip via iphone pics...

  1. As others have said, "the best camera is the one you have with you". And, especially when running around in air laden with salt water, cameras without openings where salt water can get in and corrode things are really great tools! (That being said, I just got a new camera, as you can tell from my WW post!)

My current fav iPhone apps are Camera+, Instagram, Hipstamatic, Diptic, Snapseed, and iPhoto (I am a Mac type of guy.)

    Happy WW!

  5. I love the Sun and Palm trees (2nd row) reminds me of a drawing I did once (about 30 years ago) in those greenish gray color tones of a gigantic pea and palm trees, never knew just what promoted it but seeing this it makes sense in a way (except for the pea pod :) must have been awaking dream...

  9. The one on the top right looks like a cartoon character silhouette! I am loving my android for documenting my day in ways I can't with my camera. It does make you think about composition, perspective and angle more than usual. You have had some awesome vacations this summer, BTW.

  15. Looks like you had so much fun! I'm really bad about carrying around my big camera, and I don't have one on my current phone, so I have a little Samsung digital camera that has a permanent place in my purse for those unexpected photo-op moments! I'm always surprised at the great pics it can take.

  16. Oh my gosh, I am jealous of every second of your trip. Your phone pics look better than my BEST pics. I've heard great things about Snapseed so I think it's time I bite the bullet and just go for it.

  21. I love Instagram. And you can tell you brother in law that IG has send more business my way then website, Twitter and Facebook combined and I did not even link it to my actual work site! It is the new way to share photos for sure.

  22. I wrote a very similar post the other day with the same findings! http://dagmarbleasdale.com/2012/08/tutorial-of-my-favorite-instagram-filters/

Using your iPhone camera is so much more convenient and that's all I use now! And it has totally changed what I now take pictures of. I wonder how professional photographers like you feel after years of perfecting their art and lugging a big camera around?

Have you heard of those lenses for the iPhone I mention in my post? Can't wait to get them! I'm so glad I didn't buy a DSLR camera, I was just going to spend a lot of money on it. Now I don't need to :)

  26. LOOKS like so much fun, wish I get jump on a plane and head to Cali. I have to agree, having my phone with me makes it easier to snap shots of my little dude, and a lot easier than lugging my big camera around to capture little moments.

  27. What a fun trip collection! The iPhone (4 + 4S) can indeed be a great camera that is available at a moment's notice. You did well with it on this trip.

  28. I've enjoyed seeing your fun trip pics come in on Instagram. And yes, that chair was Cool!

I'm a Droid user, so some of those iPhone apps aren't available to me. In the meantime, I've been playing around with PixlrOMatic (my last two WW posts were all Instagram photos, so this week, I'm using phone pics tended to in this app) & retroCamera (this one's a lot of fun, but not applicable in all situations).

Glad you guys had such a fantastic trip! :>

  30. I know how you feel. I´m so sad summer is almost over, too. The kids had their first three days of school. Now they are counting the days till fall break starts. ;)
Lish,I love your Iphone photos! Just got me a new cellphone and love taking photos with it. I´m still thinking about joining Instagram... :)

    Have a great week,

  32. Great pictures of a fun time. School starts today for DD, she's bemoaning the end of summer too. I like your comment about the best camera being the one you have with you. I have to remind myself of that sometimes. You can't always get the shot you want with a point and shoot (or an I-phone), but it does force you to look for other shots you might not have gotten if you had the SLR.

  33. I need to start utilizing my SmartPhone camera more often - or at least utilizing Instagram when I use my SmartPhone camera since I've got a bunch of pictures on it I keep forgetting to download to my computer! :) LOVE all your shots - looks like an awesome vacation! :)

  40. I'm with you on not being ready to give up summer. And I always love seeing your ig pics. I totally agree about seeing things differently and taking shots I wouldn't take with my camera. I love my phone for that. I find that I'm always seeing photographically and having my phone handy to capture a unique perspective or an unusual moment is very freeing creatively.

So glad you all have enjoyed a wonderful trip. Looks like Heaven ;)

  41. Personally, I am an Instagram junkie!! I love seeing your pics (and those of other fellow bloggers on Instagram). I agree with you that it's often easier to snap a pic with your phone and upload immediately. I always have my camera with me but sometimes it's just easier to snap an iPhone pic. My favourite apps at the moment are Squaready & Frametastic :)
