WW: The External Forces of Creativity

I had some darker than normal introspective kinda days last week. Being someone who has battled depression, I often find myself fearing those dark thoughts and feelings. Photobucket But this time I didn't allow myself to succumb. I instead chose to channel that energy through my lens. I grabbed my camera and took to nature. Photobucket The smell of sweet pine. The texture of crisp leaves against my finger tips. My senses seemed heightened. Photobucket I allowed myself to wholeheartedly submit to her healing powers. I bypassed norms and comfortable boundaries as I became one with mother earth right there in the bed of pine needles and red clay soil.Photobucket Exposed. Calm. And open to the beautiful creations all around me.

Directed properly, those joyless, bleak moments can lend themselves to powerful inspiration and creativity. Use them.

  7. Sorry you are struggling with depression. I'm really lucky I don't have to deal with it, except for one episode 15 or so years ago. So I have a glimpse of how hard it is -- I have a family member whose life is totally run by depression, and it's heart-breaking to see. I'm glad you have your photography to help you and that you don't let it rule your life.

  16. To acknowledge, accept and instigate coping strategies, is the first step to not fall back into the depths of depression... this I know, after also batteling after losing my 12 week pregnant wife 3 and a bit years ago...

    Keep strong!

Love your pics, but more importantly, the story behind them, lovely... Mines up as well at AussiePomm - Cymbidium Orchids

  17. This is a great reminder, and I need it now more than ever. It can be so hard to make the effort when you're in a bad place, but the healing power of nature can't be underestimated.

  18. I love your photos - especially the image of the pressed 4-leaf clovers. Yes. I can relate to this. It's the time of year here in New England that brings it on for me. Returning to nature and just shutting my mind off and just becoming present seems to help.

  21. Alicia,
Thank You for sharing your inspiration for creativity. I, too, battle depression and anxiety. It is a strong person who admits they struggle and have the courage to do something about it. I find much encouragement and hope is this little thing we call blogging.

  44. Thank you for being so lovely and open about feeling blue, but using photography to feel better. I've had to leave my husband in England to come back to the States while we go through the long process of a spouse visa. It's been some serious blue days for me, and if I didn't have my blog and photography, I'd be lost right now.

  58. Hi Alicia!!

I know exactly how you feel. I have diabetes and because of what I've gone through in my life (I'm a survivor of spousal abuse and a sexual assault, I've had 18 surgeries) has left me fighting depression. I find through your blog and others that I've been having better days.

You are a beautiful woman, a great mom and a great person. It comes through your pictures.

I want to thank you for being a part of what I call Blogland!!  Your beauty is shining through!!
