Recently we had a tornado watch and in preparation for what was to come, soccer was cancelled and many were asked to leave work early. We did get some rain late that night, but I have to chuckle at the nonexistent "weather" in these parts. They have it so infrequently no one knows quite how to react when anything happens. In Iowa, there has to be lightening before they cancel any sporting event and we've been at several with tornado sirens. And unless it's 30 below with wind chills of negative 50, school is most likely on. Can't wait til we see snow flurries here. That will be quite the event.
So, to say this Iowa girl was tickled to see ice chunks falling from the sky would be an understatement. It may not be the golf ball size we've grown accustomed to in the midwest but it was a fun change of pace.
Unfortuntately it was in the 40s and it melted almost as quickly as it came. It was all I could do to snap a few pics. Nothing amazing, but documented nonetheless- thanks to my handy iphone. And my little Pokey even cooperated for a quick shot.
So, this was certainly the highlight of our winter!
If you follow me on instagram you may have seen these last two. The sun peeked out and made for some beautiful reflections as the ice was thawing on the driveway.
Just to be clear, I am happy with the temperatures here in the south. And although the weather is a little boring and predictable most of the time, it certainly beats having to wear thermals and golashes until April. Just don't be surprised if I get a little excited about some hail. ;)
If you need help getting through the last stretch of winter in your neck of the woods, I have just the thing! This heartwarming seasonal book, Bittersweet Walnut Grove, is chock-full of winter recipes and crafts and the perfect way to pass the time with your kiddos on some of those nippy days.
And Kristy of Life-n-Reflection co-authored this fabulous book with her sister and mom. Apparently they all got the crafty gene! Stop over and take a peek and snag the free recipe cards!
Also, before I forget... just a couple things I wanted to mention.
Please help me welcome Linea to Project Alicia! Photo sharing for the 21st century. Make albums from the convenience of your ipad! Brilliant if I do say so myself. Click over and see for youself!
And lastly, a week ago my McAfee SiteAdvisor flagged Linky Tools. I phoned Brent Riggs and talked to him personally. He assured me all was fine with his site and then worked with McAffee to get the error remedied. Just thought you should know that not only is his Linky Tools bug free, the customer service is superb. Thanks Ed for the help getting the contact info!

Hail, how fun! Kind of more fun than snow because it's so rare.
ReplyDeleteyay! you finally got a taste of winter. i can imagine too, being excited for a taste of it if only the majority of the tiime was nicer. this has been a long, hard winter with too much snow for my liking. But, I'm trying really hard to stay positive! Spring will come! :) Great photos. I love all the hail in the second shot.
ReplyDeleteThat's impressive! Don't think I've ever seen hail like it! x
ReplyDeleteWe're a little farther north than you and we had enough snow to build a snowman! I will be posting pictures a little later. You're right. Everything shuts down when ice or snow threatens. Be thankful. No one around these parts can drive in the stuff. There will be no bread, milk or water on store shelves. Don't ask me why. It's a southern thing, I guess? Maybe you'll get to see some snow yet!
ReplyDeleteVery cool photos.
ReplyDeleteWhao..hail.. hope that it didn't do too much damage. The last time I saw hail was in Sydney when I was a student.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for hosting and thank you for the Linea recommendation! I've been busting to figure out a way to share my photos between my ipad and phone!
ReplyDeleteMuch appreciated!
Aanika X
Wow that looks like a crunchy walk, on the hail! The photo sharing is new to me, and the tools we have now days is amazing. I enjoyed clicking on all your links in the post and the recipe cards to DL is a bonus! The only link that didnt work is the one for more WW Linkies, Thanks for hosting WW, have a great day!
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha I would have been giddy with glee as well! We rarely see anything but sunshine in Phoenix, and I desperately miss the wild weather of Southern Minnesota!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm not nuts! lol. I hate to whine, but it's weird when you grow up with crazy weather and then move somewhere that's mostly sunny with little weather to speak of, ha. Had no idea I'd actually miss it...
ReplyDeleteI love watching it hail, as long as I am safe in my house of course. We get to see it bouncing around on the porch. Love your pictures.
ReplyDeleteOh, so happy to hear that the links are helpful. Thanks for the heads up on the WW site. I'll get right on that. Thanks for the visit, Karren!
ReplyDeleteNo prob! I'm anxious to try it out myself. I love all I can do on my iphone these days. ;)
ReplyDeleteNo damage. I think they were too small and melted too fast. When we lived in IA we did have some golf ball sized hail that did considerable damage to our home and our car. Our insurance rates went up after that, ha.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sarah! It was much cooler in person. My pics don't do justice, but at least I got it documented in some capacity. ;)
ReplyDeleteOh wow! So fun! I'm sure ya'll were stoked! Can't wait to see your snowman pics! And yes, I've heard you better stock up if a storm's a'comin. ;)
ReplyDeleteYes! Yah! Crazy that I'm excited about it when others are sick of it. ;) I do remember come February- any little sign of spring gave me hope (in those long winters in the midwest). Hang in there, girl!
ReplyDeleteWe've seen it quite a bit in IA, but we were just excited to have any kind of weather. ;) The hail was pretty fun though. Just wish it'd stuck around a bit longer...
ReplyDeleteOMG a tornado watch? Scary! Cool pics of all the hail.
ReplyDeleteYou know I'm laughing at the hail, right? lol
ReplyDeleteI love that your daughter is in short sleeves surrounded by hail!
ReplyDeleteOur western South Dakota weather is cold (a high of 17* today) and very windy. Lucky for us we got chores done before the wind hit.
Super cool shots Alicia! :)
ReplyDeleteBeing from the Midwest and only in VA for a couple of months, I have say that my boys and I get excited at just the mention of snow. We've had a hard time adjusting to this mild weather! I'll join you in your excitement!
ReplyDeleteWe also got some hail (in Houston, TX) last week - it was quite a surprise, as it doesn't happen very often (and when it does, we start looking for funnel clouds.)
ReplyDeleteGlad I could help you with Brent's contact info - and glad he got the issue w/McAfee straightened out!
Cheers,
~EdT.
Wow! You got a lot of hail! Great shots. Thanks for hosting.
ReplyDeleteWhat...you have hail?!? We haven't seen anything other than rain here in the Pacific NW and let me tell ya, this Canadian is realllly missing the snow! Sigh...perhaps a trip to the mountains is in order soon. :D
ReplyDeleteBrent over at Linky simply rocks! I have always been impressed with how fast he responds to my inquiries, awesome CS if you ask me.
I can almost hear it crunching under my feet.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos! Love those boots! :)
ReplyDeleteWow! That looks like some serious weather! Our snow from last weekend has already turned to rain today :(
ReplyDeleteI like hail too even though we have LONG winters here in Utah. Glad you caught some great shots. Love them all.
ReplyDeleteThanks. This was pretty small hail and it came and went pretty quickly...
ReplyDeleteOnly a watch, which never materialized into anything. Coming from the midwest, I'm pretty used to tornado warnings... ;)
ReplyDeleteIt was very cool. So glad my daughter heard it over our movie, haha!
ReplyDeleteShe is always in short sleeves... It's all I can do to get either of my kids to wear pants most days, ha. Sounds a little too cold for me in SD. I'll send some warm thoughts your way. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Char! ;)
ReplyDeleteHa! Thanks Mimi! Glad I'm not alone. ;)
ReplyDeleteI have never seen hail documented so gorgeously!! And hey - thanks for having your Wordless Wednesday up on Tuesday and all that! :-)
ReplyDeleteYes, we've seen plenty of hail with tornadoes in the midwest. That's when it worries me... this time around was just fun. Thanks again for your help with linky tools. I'm glad it all worked out. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt was a lot but it melted so fast it was tricky to capture. ;) Thanks for the visit!
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with ya! I'd love to see some snow! I'm hoping we can squeeze in a trip to the mountains in NC before it's too warm. And yes, Brent knows how to run a great business. :) Have a good rest of your week!
ReplyDeleteIt was like that for a couple minutes until it started getting soft and melting... ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Stacey! :)
ReplyDeleteNah, not too serious. It melted pretty fast. ;) Definitely a fun change around here...
ReplyDeleteThanks Brandie!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pics!
ReplyDeletewell if you are ever just longing for massive piles of snow feel free to stop on by my house in Northern Ontario, Canada... we have plenty to share ;)
ReplyDeleteI get excited by hail too! We hardly ever get any, so when it does fall, it is just wild to watch it come down!
ReplyDeleteThat hail looks more dangerous (rolling over) than anything else!! We have hail the size of golf balls sometimes!! (but so far, NOT this summer... :()
ReplyDeleteMines up as well at AussiePomm - Blast from the past!!!!
Have a great day!!
The hail makes for great photos, but I'd rather have snow.

Winter keeps avoiding us here, in spite of my wishing, hoping and praying. I'm still holding out hope that we *might* get some snow before winter finally departs...we seem to have been in a snow-less bubble this winter while it goes all around us instead. I'd be stoked for a bunch of hail at this point, too! Love all the shots! :)
ReplyDeleteThe 5-Dollar 100 Year Old Dragon
My sister lives in Charlotte and I was surprised by all the snow they got. Great pics!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't look like the weather here this week will be any better! Good luck down south!
ReplyDeleteIn Nebraska it was 50 on Sunday. It snowed on Monday. Now we're in for a blizzard tomorrow. I'll take the south weather back now. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHaha well we've definitely had a little more "weather" than you since our move to Florida... but nothing like our Michigan winter "weather" used to be. I have to say, a year and a half here and I think I've gone soft... though I'm sure I could still drive in anything ;)
ReplyDeleteLoved it too.
ReplyDeleteI love the close up shots. OhmySnow!
These pictures remind me of my walk this morning!! I was 20 minutes away from home when it started snowing and the snow turned to icy sleet that pounded my face. It was cold while I walked home but it sure was pretty!
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm from Chicago, and I still get tickled when the first snow falls, but this crazy weather we had to wait until almost the middle of January for any good amount of snow, but the cold is here.. nope it's gone again the windows are open, close the windows it's in the teens, and tomorrow the sun is shining.. go figure! Some really great shots. Thank for sharing!
ReplyDeleteas always your pictures are so beautiful!! We got Sandy and Nemo on our block, and it's time they take their baggage lol
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting a linky, I have one as well, if you'd like to stop by, and there is also a link for a giveaway link-up ;)

These are wonderful shots! Thanks for sharing and for hosting the hop! I lived in Iowa for close to 3 years as a child. I remember the great fun we had with sledding, but I also remember the winters were really cold and the summers really hot.
ReplyDeleteHope your car was in the garage, though...Hail's pretty rare here in the Northeast, so I loved getting to see your great photographs of it. Thanks for sharing them!
ReplyDeleteI'm in South Carolina too! We got a bit of snow this past weekend in the Upstate, but not as much as I'd have liked. I'm always crossing my fingers for a big snow storm! ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy WW. thanks for hosting.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.
Nan

Love it! Don't remember the last time I saw hail though. Pretty cool :)
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. I was born in Montreal where winter can be rough, moved to Calgary in '74 where winters can be also rough, especially these past years and now live in Vancouver where we get the odd (1 day so far) snow fall, but, it's gone in a couple of days.
ReplyDeleteI love living here!!!!!!! Other than house prices, there's nothing to complain about, really. People not from here say we get too much rain, but, it doesn't bother me. I've never seen greener grass.
Take care:)
Pam

Great shots!! :)
ReplyDeleteHail is so pretty! We're missing the snow here, too.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on Brent's customer service — he responds quickly and professionally.
I didn't realize I had so many pictures! I finally got them all loaded and the post up. Thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteYou even make hail look pretty!
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of hail! Great shots - it's so neat to see it up close. It rarely hails around here, but boy does it snow!
ReplyDeleteOh I just love it when Mother Nature gives us something different.
ReplyDeleteCool pics! We rarely get hail here either, so it is fun when it happens. Word to the wise: If you do get snow, stay off the roads! The worst part of living where there is little weather threat is that when it happens people freak out. Very few southern folks know how to drive in the snow... born and raised in SE VA, I speak from experience ;)
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing, I've never seen hail like that!
ReplyDeleteIt is kind of pretty! http://poshonabudget.com/2013/02/ww-you-just-cant-make-this-stuff-up.html
ReplyDeleteLoved your hail pictures. Where in SC are you? I'm in Florence, and we actually got some snow over the weekend. It made my small people quite happy! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up over at
Tales of a Pee Dee
Mama
It almost looks like snow! Thank you Alicia for the book shout out!
ReplyDeleteOh fun! Yes, we in the south get giddy over anything frozen! Been quite a wet, boring winter in Georgia.
ReplyDeleteI'm always surprised when we get weird Northern weather down here in Houston.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I had frost on my window here in SW Florida. It made me smile. I love visiting your blog every week. Thanks for the linkup :)
ReplyDeleteWe get hail like that here occasionally in southern California, and a couple of times, we've gotten great big piles of it! The cats (I am Sparkle the Designer Cat's "human") hate it because it is so loud coming down. I can't imagine golfball-sized hail - that must be punishing on cars out in Iowa!
ReplyDeleteYay for hail!
ReplyDeleteHappy WW :)

lol, being raised in the south, I know the excitement of flurries.. :)
ReplyDeleteNice shots- we had hail too, but I didn't make it off the porch to get close-ups...ours was a bit bigger and it took a long time to melt.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear it was just a warning.
ReplyDeleteI hate living in a cold climate, but there's something about snow and ice in a warmer climate that can't be overlooked. It's hailed a few times in the summer here and has me in awe every time.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like what we are supposed to get this evening. Thanks for being in the hop. Have a nice day.
ReplyDeleteJoining up this week with you, Alicia! It's been a long time, and I'm glad to be back, although like you, this week it isn't so 'wordless' ... I'll do better next week for sure! Love your images ... haven't seen any hail here in awhile, but we're expecting both snow and ice tonight! Can't say I'm ready yet for spring ... I'm a 'winter' sort of girl! :) Thanks for hosting this sweet challenge! Blessings to you ~ Deborah
ReplyDeleteP.S. oops, :/ ... not quite sure how Disquis works ... I don't see it here, but I hope you got the link to my site that I shared here when signing into comment!
ReplyDeleteThose are quite the photos. Hope your area was not hit too hard. Thanks for linking up with me this week - I appreciate it.
ReplyDeletei'm trying!! :)
